Incentives and key facts

What businesses should know first

§48E and transferability

The §48E clean electricity investment credit covers commercial solar and storage. Projects that did not begin construction by July 4, 2026 must be placed in service by December 31, 2027 (IRS Notice 2025-42). A business that cannot use the whole credit can transfer (sell) it to another taxpayer for cash. Talk to your tax adviser before you sign.

Demand charges and storage

Many commercial bills include a demand charge based on your highest power draw in the billing period. Solar alone may not cut that peak if it happens in the evening or on a cloudy day. A battery can discharge at peak times to shave it. Ask for an analysis built on your utility interval data. Storage companies

USDA REAP for farms and rural businesses

The USDA Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) offers grants and loan guarantees to agricultural producers and rural small businesses for renewable energy systems, including solar. Check eligibility with your USDA Rural Development state office before you commit. Companies that work on farms

Community solar for business

Where your state has a program, you can subscribe to part of an off-site solar project and get credits on your bill. There is nothing to install and no roof needed. It suits tenants, shaded sites and multi-site businesses. Community solar providers

How to choose

Six things to check before you sign

  1. 01

kW track record in your state

Filter by state and sort by kW installed. Open Details to see the states each company serves and its SPW rank.

  2. 02

    Project size fit

A 100 kW roof and a 5 MW ground array need different teams. Use the project size filter (from ENF Solar).

  3. 03

    In-house EPC or subcontracted

Ask who designs, who installs and who handles interconnection. SPW lists each company's primary service.

  4. 04

    PPA or lease capability

If you want $0 upfront, filter for companies that offer a PPA or lease, or that partner with a financier.

  5. 05

    O&M and production guarantee

Ask what monitoring and maintenance is included, for how long, and whether output is guaranteed.

  6. 06

    Licenses and NABCEP

Check the electrical or contractor license for your state. NABCEP certification shows trained staff.

How proposals work here

  1. 1. Describe your site. Location, property, bill, project type and how you want to pay.
  2. 2. Shortlist 3 companies. Pick them in the directory, or start from the three with the most kW in your state.
  3. 3. Compare side by side. Send each the same brief and checklist, so the proposals line up.

Trust and disclosure

Where the data comes from

Last updated October 29, 2026.

Sources

Solar Power World Top Solar Contractors lists, 2023 to 2026 (kW installed, rank, markets, primary service). ENF Solar (installation size). EnergySage and SolarReviews (ratings, financing). Each company's own website (services, description, logo and photos) and published license details. Every listing names its sources.

Methodology

We started from 1,264 researched companies and kept 1,149. We removed 94 whose sites were dead, parked or missing, 5 that redirected to a parking or unrelated page, and 16 duplicates. "Strong" evidence (769) means an SPW commercial, community or utility listing, an ENF 1 MW+ listing, or a commercial specialist. "Medium" means a dedicated commercial page on the company's site.

About the numbers

kW and MW figures are self-reported by companies to Solar Power World. We have not audited them. Companies appear on different list years, and one project can be counted by both its developer and its EPC, so the combined MW total overstates what was built. Ratings are shown with their source and review count.

How we make money

We do not make money from this directory today. There are no affiliate links, paid placements or featured slots. If that changes, anything paid will be labeled. Privacy: the brief you build on this page stays in your browser. We do not collect it. Logos and photos belong to the companies shown.

FAQ

Questions businesses ask

How much does commercial solar cost?
It depends on system size, roof or ground, local labor, equipment and the cost to connect to the grid. We do not publish a single figure because it varies so much. Ask every company for the total price and the price per watt for the same scope, so you can compare like for like.
What is the payback period for commercial solar?
It depends on your electricity rate, your demand charges, the incentives you can use and how you pay. Ask each company to show the assumptions behind its payback figure: production, utility rate, rate increases and tax treatment.
What is the §48E deadline?
Under IRS Notice 2025-42, a project that did not begin construction by July 4, 2026 must be placed in service by December 31, 2027 to claim the §48E clean electricity investment credit. Ask each installer for a realistic placed-in-service date in writing.
What is the difference between a PPA and a lease?
In both, a provider owns the system and you pay little or nothing upfront. With a lease you pay a fixed amount for the equipment. With a power purchase agreement (PPA) you pay an agreed rate for each kWh the system produces. The provider claims the tax credit in both cases.
Is my roof suitable for solar?
Look at roof age and condition, structural capacity, shading and usable space. If the roof needs replacing soon, do that first. If the roof is not suitable, a ground mount, a carport or a community solar subscription can still work.
Can a business use community solar?
Yes, where your state has a program and your utility takes part. You subscribe to a share of an off-site solar project and receive credits on your electric bill. You install nothing and need no roof. Use the Community solar tab to find providers.
How is this directory ranked?
By default, by kW installed in each company's latest year on the Solar Power World Top Solar Contractors list. Those figures are self-reported. Nobody pays to appear or to rank higher.
